After fighting through Hell and raiding Heaven, Cal Knox had learned one hard truth about dating two angels and a succubus: sometimes the heroic choice was taking a nap.

At the bedroom door, Aurelia gave him the stern look that once made a heavenly execution squad reconsider its orders. Her gold wings filled the frame, and very little else tried as she pointed toward the couch. “Forty minutes, then you may return if invited.”

Obediently, Cal lay down with one boot still on the floor and called it less a rest than a cooldown. Aurelia informed him that everything was a cooldown to him.

Behind her, Vesper laughed from the bed, while Ravena added something low enough to hide beneath the soft snap of her tail. Aurelia’s stern face warmed at once.

With a grin, he corrected her. “Not everything. Some things are damage over time.”

Gold feathers flared around the vanguard. She leaned closer, caught his shirt, and kissed him until the couch stopped feeling like a punishment. When she released him, the proud angel looked pleased with her work.

Before releasing his shirt, she reminded him that tonight belonged to all of them, which meant each person got to choose part of it.

The answer mattered more than the joke, so he gave her the honest one: he liked knowing the three women wanted time together.

For a moment, open desire softened her battle-ready posture. “Good. We want you too, but not as the hinge holding us together.”

From the bed, Vesper warned that another kiss would turn their private time into a shared turn again. Calling that a terrible threat, Aurelia stepped backward and pulled the door shut with one final order to sleep.

Six weeks of peace had made the apartment feel smaller, though nobody wanted a larger one yet. Armor crowded the hall rack beside Ravena’s high boots, three kinds of shampoo occupied the shower, and black feathers kept turning up in the toaster.

He loved every stupid inch of it, especially the parts that proved none of them planned to leave.

On the rug outside the bedroom, Biscuit circled twice and dropped with a tired grunt. The stocky brown dog set his chin upon his paws, keeping the closed door within sight while the pale ring around his neck glowed faintly.

While tugging off his remaining boot, Cal assigned guard duty with orders to wake him for screaming, portals, or the end of the world.

One brown ear twitched before Biscuit closed his eyes.

That made two sleeping heroes, though only one of them trusted the other to stay alert.

During the last month, Cal had learned to sleep whenever nobody needed saving. It was less a habit than a class feature, and his last clear thought was that forty minutes sounded generous.

Inside the bedroom, Vesper counted ten slow breaths after the latch clicked, then declared Cal fully asleep.

Across the middle of the bed, Ravena stretched with shameless grace. Her red skin glowed in the soft lamp light, while black curls spilled across one bare shoulder. “You counted too fast.”

The dark angel reminded her that Cal had survived two divine invasions and could fall asleep during a trumpet charge.

Near the footboard, Aurelia crossed her arms, but the pose pushed her breasts together and ruined most of its authority. Since the meeting had been Vesper’s suggestion, she invited the dark angel to begin.

The dark angel’s black wings gave one pleased shake. She adored it when Aurelia pretended not to be eager.

All three women were grown, powerful, and sure of what they wanted, yet Vesper waited before moving closer. They had made rules after Heaven because a look could invite, but only words settled the matter.

She held one hand toward Aurelia and the other toward Ravena, then asked whether they both still wanted this.

Around her wrist, Ravena’s tail curled in a warm yes. After taking Vesper’s waiting fingers, Aurelia met both women’s eyes and gave the answer aloud. “Yes, with both of you.”

A hungry smile replaced Vesper’s teasing one because she had wanted to hear that for weeks.

Without waiting longer, Ravena rose onto her knees and kissed her.

At first, the kiss felt like a challenge, since Ravena did most things that way. One hand slid into silver hair, and her tail drew the angel closer by the waist, but Vesper answered with slow hunger that stole the smug curve from Ravena’s mouth.

For three measured breaths, Aurelia watched them.

Then patience lost.

She knelt behind Vesper, swept her hair aside, and kissed the dark angel’s neck. Vesper arched between them as gold and black wings opened across the bed, catching Ravena within a warm cage of feathers.

Against Aurelia’s mouth, Vesper whispered that the kiss alone had been worth betraying Heaven. The gold angel answered at the same tender spot, counting herself as at least three of Vesper’s reasons, while Ravena laughed at her modesty.

Reaching past the dark angel, the succubus hooked two fingers beneath Aurelia’s chin and drew her near. Their first kiss held less challenge than the one before it, growing slower and almost careful until Aurelia caught Ravena by the hips.

The delighted sound Ravena made turned Vesper’s gaze sharp with interest.

She slipped between gold wings like a thief entering an open vault, then kissed Aurelia’s shoulder and Ravena’s throat in turn. Warm hands traveled across smooth skin, strong backs, and soft curves, while feathers swept over thighs and Ravena’s tail traced playful lines that made both angels shiver.

Nobody hurried.

Each woman had wanted Cal first for a different reason. Aurelia trusted his stubborn courage, Vesper admired the part of him willing to laugh at impossible rules, and Ravena desired the man who met a succubus and still asked what she wanted.

Wanting one another had grown inside the spaces between those choices.

Now there was no space left.

With one careful push, Aurelia eased Vesper onto the pillows. “Tell me if my wings press too hard.”

“They do.”

When Aurelia froze, Vesper pulled her down and kissed the worry away. “I like it.”

Ravena laughed before stealing the rest of that answer with another kiss. She drew one black wing across herself like silk, then guided Aurelia with a slow hand that kept every choice plain.

Between them, Vesper reached for both women, and their bodies met in a tangle of red skin, pale skin, gold feathers, and black. Heat gathered beneath the winged canopy until even the cool night air tasted sweet.

For once, Vesper stopped making jokes.

Ravena’s polished confidence broke first, and her breath caught as the angels learned what made her tremble. She clung to Vesper, then turned to kiss Aurelia with open need, giving back every touch and taking nothing for granted.

Against Ravena’s cheek, Vesper asked if she wanted more. Her horns tapped the headboard through a hard nod. “Yes, both of you, and do not dare stop now.”

When Aurelia asked whether that was an order, the succubus swallowed her pride and named it a plea.

That pleased the vanguard more.

They found a shared rhythm, bold enough to leave no desire hidden and gentle enough to change whenever one woman asked. Kisses deepened, fingers tightened, and sheltering wings shut the rest of creation outside.

Pleasure rose through them in bright waves. Each woman gave as openly as she received, and every spoken yes made the next one easier.

Ravena cried out first. Vesper followed with Aurelia’s name upon her lips, while Aurelia buried her own broken sound against the two women holding her.

For several warm seconds, the universe behaved.

Then the bed made a wet swallowing noise.

Opening one eye, Vesper called Cal’s name with more suspicion than hope.

Beneath Ravena, the mattress dipped hard enough to tilt all three women toward its center. Green-black light leaked through the sheets and spread in a perfect circle, slick as oil and bright around the edge.

From somewhere under the world came another slow, deep slurp.

One look downward confirmed Ravena’s worst guess. “That is not Cal.”

The bed vanished beneath her.

She dropped to her waist before her tail lashed around the iron frame. Although the aperture showed no visible depth, dark water ran down its round walls as if the bedroom had opened into a living ocean.

Aurelia caught Ravena’s forearm while Vesper seized the other. The instant they had a stable grip, the pull doubled and dragged all three toward the hole.

Loose sheets went first. Two pillows followed, and then the brass lamp tore free from its table without losing its flame.

Far below, the tiny light sank through black water until a vast shape passed beneath it. Three pale eyes turned toward the bedroom, each larger than the stolen mattress.

When Vesper tried to summon her status panel, only gray sparks formed above her wrist, leaving them without a gate prompt.

Refusing to wait for permission, Aurelia drove one gold wing through the wall until bone caught a wooden stud. Her free wing folded around the other women as she ordered Ravena to climb over her.

The succubus tightened her grip instead, watching black marks crawl from her wrists toward her elbows. Those thin collars were pulling at their bond rather than their bodies.

Vesper saw the answer before Aurelia did.

She kissed Ravena hard.

The nearest black mark split, and white light burst from the crack.

As the pressure eased, Vesper named the bond in two fierce words. “Ours, not its.”

Aurelia understood at once. Her grip changed from desperate restraint to an offered hand, and Ravena chose it again.

Golden light joined the white. For one second, their bodies rose above the spinning water while the broken collars smoked across Ravena’s arms.

Below them, all three pale eyes narrowed.

The aperture inhaled.

Air screamed through the bedroom, tearing drawers from the dresser and pictures from the walls. The closed door bowed inward, though the apartment beyond remained silent.

Aurelia’s wing ripped free with a spray of plaster. She turned as she fell, taking the edge of the hole across her shoulder so Vesper and Ravena did not strike it first.

Her shout carried Cal’s name through the bending door.

In the next room, Biscuit woke before the sound arrived.

His head snapped up as the pale ring around his neck flared white. After one sharp breath, he struck Cal’s chest with both front paws and barked directly into his face.

Under two heavy paws, Cal woke without dignity and managed half a complaint.

Another bark cut him off.

The apartment groaned around them, and cold air rushed beneath the bedroom door carrying dust, gold feathers, and Ravena’s perfume. Biscuit reached the door first but did not cross the threshold, planting himself outside while he barked at the handle.

Even before he understood the danger, Cal understood that choice: Biscuit had remained outside the sexual space but refused to abandon anyone inside it.

He grabbed the handle, and the door tore itself from his hand.

Half the bedroom had disappeared.

A green-black hole filled the center of the floor, swallowing broken furniture and everything loose. Aurelia hung halfway through it with one bloody wing jammed against the ruined bed frame; her right hand held Vesper, and Vesper held Ravena.

Dark water climbed their bodies in living ropes.

Through the rushing water, Aurelia gasped Cal’s name.

He wrapped one arm around the doorframe and lunged with the other, but his fingers missed hers by an inch. The water yanked again, folding Aurelia’s wing while black feathers vanished beneath her.

Ravena’s tail snapped across the opening like a red whip.

Then all three women disappeared.

The aperture began to shrink, cutting through the broken bed without touching the floor beneath it. A blue panel slammed across Cal’s sight before panic could make the next decision for him.

Nine seconds was plenty if nobody wasted time being sane.

From the wall peg, Cal tore down his raid belt and checked it by touch. Three red vials, two blue, one roll of gauze, and the short sword he kept beside the fire extinguisher were enough to die prepared.

He clipped Biscuit’s leash to the family tag, then stopped before pulling.

The dog stood at the edge with his hackles high. Fear filled his scent and shook his back legs, but he did not move away from the water.

Beside the shaking dog, Cal crouched and told him the women were down there.

Biscuit growled at the hole.

Seven seconds.

Quietly, Cal offered him the only choice that mattered. “I’m going, but you can stay.”

Before he finished, the leash snapped tight as Biscuit jumped first.

With a breathless laugh, Cal followed and admitted it had been a stupid question.

He dove through the narrowing gate.

Cold pressure touched his face and folded the apartment into a thin green line. For one endless moment, he fell past shapes that might have been cities, skeletons, or futures that died before anyone could live them.

Biscuit spun below him, paws clawing at empty space, until Cal caught the leash with both hands. Together they dropped beyond the last trace of home.

The gate snapped shut above them.

Dark water swallowed every direction, and crushing cold pressed against Cal’s chest. He tried to breathe by reflex, expecting pain, but clean air filled his lungs where no air should exist.

A white bubble of light joined his heart to Biscuit’s glowing tag.

The dog paddled once, looked offended by the ocean, and began swimming down. Cal drew his short sword and kicked after him as a second panel opened.

Far beneath them, three pale eyes opened in the green-black sea.

Biscuit showed his teeth and swam faster.

Under a black ocean, down was wherever the dog went.

Cal kicked after Biscuit while the last green trace of the portal vanished above them. There was no sun, no surface, and no useful landmark except three pale eyes waiting far below.

Those eyes were getting larger.

His first breath had felt like a trick, so he held the next one until his chest hurt. The white cord between his heart and Biscuit’s tag thinned at once.

“Of course the water has relationship mechanics.”

Biscuit glanced back, paddling with all four paws. The motion was not graceful, but it carried him downward with the force of a furry anchor.

Cal inhaled.
