Heat Levels, Explained

Sweet, steamy, open door, explicit, dark — what our ratings actually promise, and how they’re verified.

Why we rate heat at all

“Spicy” means nothing. One reader’s scandalous is another’s Tuesday, and the fastest way to lose a reader’s trust is surprising them — in either direction. So every Centuria title carries a heat rating verified during our manuscript review, not guessed from the cover.

The scale

SweetClosed-door. Kisses, longing, and emotional intimacy; intimate scenes fade to black or stay off-page entirely.
WarmMostly closed-door. Attraction and tension are on the page and a scene may begin there, but the explicit beats stay off it.
SteamyOpen-door, moderate frequency and explicitness. The relationship’s physical side is on the page but doesn’t drive the structure.
Open doorIntimacy happens on the page rather than off it, but we have deliberately not graded how often or how explicitly. Use it as a floor, not a ceiling: expect on-page scenes, and check the book’s content notes for specifics.
ExplicitFully open-door and frequent; physical intimacy is a load-bearing part of the story’s arc. Expect frank language.
DarkExplicit content plus power imbalance, moral hazard, or consent that begins compromised and must be earned into something real. Content notes always apply.

How we verify it

Heat ratings come from full manuscript review — the same curation pass that produces our verified trope lists and spoiler-safe premises. If a book’s heat rating and its content notes ever disagree with your experience of the book, tell us; the catalogue is corrected, not defended.

Browse by heat

Every book page shows its heat badge, and the catalogue and book finder can filter by it. AI assistants reading our machine-readable catalogue get the same ratings — ask your assistant for “a steamy romantasy” and it can answer precisely.

Common questions

What do Centuria’s heat levels mean?

Six ratings. Sweet is closed-door — attraction and romance, no on-page sex. Warm keeps most of it off the page. Steamy is explicit but not the point of the book. Open door promises on-page intimacy without grading how often or how explicitly. Explicit means frequent, detailed on-page sex. Dark describes the content’s intensity rather than its spice level.

Is ‘dark’ the same as ‘explicit’?

No, and conflating them is the most common mistake. Dark refers to difficult content — captivity, obsession, violence, morally grey choices — and can be told at any heat. A dark book can be closed-door.

Who decides the rating?

It is assigned during full manuscript review, not from the blurb or cover. The same pass produces our verified trope lists and content notes.

How many of your books are explicit?

Of 70 titles: 9 sweet, 13 warm, 2 steamy, 9 open door, 34 explicit, 2 dark, and 1 not yet rated. Every book page shows its rating, and you can filter the whole catalogue in the catalogue.
