The Override Window: Full Spoiler Guide
At 12:17 a.m., reviewing four unclosed identity claims after a continuity drill, Mara Venn’s audit screen shows SUBJECT STATUS: DECEASED, effective March 11, 9:42 p.m. — a Provisional Person Merge under reason code PPM-7, the rule she herself approved, bearing a three-issuer quorum signed with her own certificate while her card sat locked in her kitchen safe. The Override Window is Morgan Cipher’s single-night identity-erasure thriller: thirty hours in Calder County, twenty-three witnesses to a procurement fraud being “corrected” out of existence, and an auditor who must publish her own culpability to prove she is alive.
What it is
Mara is a federal identity-integrity auditor. Her mentor Rafi Sloan is already dead — a staged carbon-monoxide suicide — and drives the plot through timed recordings, a locker cache and a hollowed atlas. The three signatures on her death notice are forty-three seconds apart yet share sequence forty-one; the offset is the clock lag of Asterion Civic’s disaster-recovery staging signer, and the sequence is an Asterion batch key. PPM-7 fails open: during a continuity window two agreeing claims outweigh a third “unavailable” source, and a false death is what makes the subject unavailable. The lie makes itself true.
Who will love it
Readers of locked-clock procedurals and govtech whistleblower thrillers who enjoy an expert reasoning in public — subsecond timestamps, certificate chains, monotonic counters — and a heroine who is culpable rather than innocent. No sex, minimal profanity, brief consequential violence, and a deliberate refusal of “one monster large enough to carry the whole machine.”
Tropes
- Declared legally dead; wrong woman on the run; one-night ticking clock
- Dead mentor’s breadcrumb trail; the audit trail as weapon; reluctant cop who turns
- Villain-turned-ally (the recovery driver); privatised public authority; analog beats digital
- Exes forced to work together; sequel-hook envelope

Content notes
The on-page shooting death of a sixty-two-year-old woman; a murder staged as suicide; attempted abduction under colour of law with restraint chairs; a recovery truck rammed at people; denial of medication by identity conflict; state surveillance; career destruction by a manufactured ethics complaint.
Full plot, with spoilers
Mara escapes her own office through the mechanical chase with a burned disc, recovers her smart card, and confirms its last signature was March 10 — a delegated signing path, not burglary. Rafi’s locker holds a prepaid phone, a brass key, a library map card and six feet of receipt paper listing six earlier PPM-7 victims plus a seventh, ALMA REED, at a time that has not happened yet: 02:10:00. Eli Mercer proves Judge Price was sedated in cardiac catheterization at 9:42 with his token locked in the courthouse; the signature came from an Asterion gateway marked DR SIGNER. At Mercy Bellweather the exchange flips Mara’s blood factor to O NEGATIVE — an Rh inversion produced only by a retired staging adapter, defect DR-17, deferred four years with no closure owner. The fingerprint. In the evidence garage Rafi’s car is staged: a library stub timestamped 10:31, twenty-one minutes after his official death. A recovery truck rams the car to extract Mara; she runs its driver, Tessa Cole, into a ditch, and Tessa’s dispatch cache shows twenty-four jobs — twenty-three witnesses to a fraud hearing at nine, and job twenty-four, VENN, MARA — CONTROL SUBJECT. At 2:10 exactly Alma Reed’s status flips to deceased while she stands alive on her porch. In Rafi’s hollowed 1998 atlas: “THE AUDITOR IS NOT THE TARGET. SHE IS THE ACCEPTANCE TEST.” At Postal Annex Six — billed as a medical annex, actually restraint chairs and no beds — they recover Alma’s ledger; page 209 is an Asterion invoice for “clean authority preparation,” approved O.R. and L.S. In the tunnel Owen Rusk gives a live custody order, an officer fires at the ledger in Alma’s hands, and she dies at Mercy at 3:52. Rusk’s order to seize her remains comes forty-three seconds later.
The ending (spoiler)
The remedy is PPM-7’s untested split-brain safety hold: three independent authority classes asserting states that cannot all be true force the exchange to freeze all merges for eleven minutes. The team builds three clocks — Judge Harland’s paper preservation order, Mercy’s admission-cart log with Alma’s recorded voice, and the Asterion signer export, which Mara obtains by re-entering the disaster-recovery room as a night contractor and exporting with her revoked card, accepted because the console’s cached trust list has no live link to the revocation list. She snaps the card and pulls the alarm. Lenora Shaw — her former mentor, who manufactured the sealed ethics complaint that ended Mara’s engagement as the method’s first prototype — revokes her role at 5:55. At 6:00 Lenora presses DISMISS and Mara presses INVOKE SAFETY HOLD in the same instant, with Rusk’s six-page manual order as the third contradictory command: IDENTITY MERGES FROZEN — USE LAST UNCONTESTED LOCAL RECORD. Field crews, asked to accept personal custody liability, stop; nineteen witnesses answer their names. Mara triggers Rafi’s release package, whose key is her own PPM-7 approval memo — publication priced in self-incrimination — and testifies without immunity. Rusk is searched at 6:31 under a paper warrant; Lenora surrenders her badge. By evening PPM-7 is disabled, but Mara’s job is not restored, Eli’s pension credit is gone, and her landlord has already refused her thirty-day certificate reading ALIVE — PROVISIONAL PENDING FEDERAL RECONCILIATION. Rafi’s last envelope holds brass key 24 and a list of systems running PPM-7 logic under other names — prisoner transfer circled: “IF YOU FIXED THE WINDOW, LOOK AT WHO BUILT THE WALL.”

An ex-fiancé, Eli Mercer, and a hand held for two steps on the courthouse stairs. Closed door, no sexual content.
